Motivational Monday

Spread love everywhere you go: first of all in your own house.  Give love to your children, to your wife or husband, to a next door neighbor….  Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier.  Be the living expression of God’s kindness; kindness in your face, kindness in your eyes, kindness in your smile, kindness in your warm greeting.

Feel Good Friday

Here are a few verses and quotes I’ve come across recently that might inspire you to do something good today!

Do not withhold good from those who deserve it, when it is in your power to act.
Proverbs 3:27

The greatest things ever done on Earth have been done little by little.
William Jennings Bryan

Do what you can, with what you have, where you are.
Theodore Roosevelt

Happy Friday! :-)

A Little Inspiration

Um, yeah, been a little while since I’ve posted anything.  What can I say?  Life happens.  Came across this quote on Beth Moore’s blog last week and just love it!  I keep reading it, and reading it again, and then reading it again.  Strong words, but just think of what our lives would be like if we took them to heart.

“Quit living as if the purpose of life is to arrive safely at death. Grab life by the mane. Set God-sized goals. Pursue God-ordained passions. Go after a dream that is destined to fail without divine intervention. Keep asking questions. Keep making mistakes. Keep seeking God. Stop pointing out problems and become part of the solution. Stop repeating the past and start creating the future. Stop playing it safe and start taking risks. Expand your horizons. Accumulate experiences. Consider the lilies. Enjoy the journey. Find every excuse you can to celebrate everything you can. Live like today is the first day and last day of your life. Don’t let what’s wrong with you keep you from worshipping what’s right with God. Burn sinful bridges. Blaze a new trail. Criticize by creating. Worry less about what people think and more about what God thinks. Don’t try to be who you’re not. Be yourself. Laugh at yourself. Quit holding out. Quit holding back. Quit running away. Chase the lion.”

I Heart SEC Football!

We watched the first SEC football game of the 2008 season last night! Woo Hoo!!!!! South Carolina vs NC State, and while it was far from the most riveting game I’ve ever watched, I loved it nonetheless. Gamecocks won it 34-0. I’m glad NC State’s QB, Russell Wilson, was not injured worse than he was. A concussion is serious business, but it looked like it could have been much worse.

This weekend’s games will not be the nail-biters that will come later in the season. Hopefully, for Auburn, beating Louisiana-Monroe it will be a walk in the park. I’ll just be glad I’m watching it on my 42 inch plasma. I sure love me some college football. :-)

Here’s to a great season for all the SEC teams. Well, except Tennessee. Maybe they’ll have a stinky season. I wish they would defect to another conference.

Meet Maria

This is Maria.
She is 4 years old.
She lives in Nicarauga with her mother and one other sibling.
She is responsible for gathering wood, running errands and cleaning.
Did I say she was 4 years old?
Isn’t she beautiful?
We are now her proud sponsors through Compassion International.

The town where Maria lives has about 4,500 residents and typical homes are constructed of dirt floors, cement walls and corrugated iron roofs. Sometimes they have food to eat. Sometimes they do not. Through Compassion and our small monthly contribution, Maria will now receive hot meals, clothing, education, books, and she will also learn about Jesus! What I love about this organization is that we get to communicate with Maria. We can write to her and she (with assistance) will write back to us. How fun is that??

If you’ve never heard of Compassion, I encourage you to visit their website. They do good things. Very good things to help children living in the midst of poverty like most of us will never experience. They take a very small amount of money from the sponsors and use it to do amazing things for these little kiddos.

See for yourself…Compassion International.

Long Time, No Post

Whew! It’s been a long time since I’ve posted anything. We’ve been busy remodeling a rental house we own and that’s taken up all of my free time for the past couple of weeks.

Here’s a project I did for my sister, Kathy’s 50th birthday back in July. I wanted to create something that would sum up Kathy in one piece of work. Problem is that she is quite unique, complicated, quirky, eclectic and very special and it takes way more than a couple of words to describe her. It’s almost impossible to sum up her life onto one piece of paper. But this was my best shot. I’m pleased with the way it turned out.

Favorite Song

I think this is my new favorite artist. I especially like her song “Letting Go.” Take a listen for yourself:

Francesca Battistelli

Her voice reminds me of someone, but I can’t think of who.

Salwen Family’s Bold Move

You won’t want to miss this story:

Sale of 1 House Will Help 30 Villages

The Salwen family of Atlanta has set the bar pretty high for the rest of us. They are trying to sell their $1.8 million historical home in Atlanta so that they can give half the proceeds to people in Ghanna through the Hunger Project. Their goal is to give $800,000 to this charity and they will downsize to a home half the size of what they are currently living in. All because their teenage daughter, Hannah, noticed a homeless man on the street and began wondering why so many have more than we need when there are those who do not have a place to live or food to eat.

I’ll be brutally honest here. When I see a homeless person on the street, my first thought is not usually one of care and concern. My first thought is usually something like, “Why can’t they just go get a job?” And for some of them, that is their job. Some of them do have homes, but come to street corners begging for money as their way of making a living. But for many others, hard times have hit them and taken away all of their security leaving them wandering the streets trying to survive.

The Salwen’s saw this, talked about it as a family, and came up with a plan to help those less fortunate than themselves. Not many of us would be willing to take such a bold step. Some of us wouldn’t even be able to make a gesture such as that. But let’s keep our minds and our eyes open to the possibilities of what we can do.

In Matthew 25:40 Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.”

Tasty New Snack

We just discovered these snacks last week and I think I’m in love with them. They are delicious, and at 100 calories and 2 grams a fat, not too bad for you either. I’ve never been a huge fan of Fig Newtons, but these are quite tasty. They’re crispy on the outside with a little chewy fruity stuff in the middle. It’s the perfect combination of crispy, chewy and sweet. In my humble opinion, Nabisco’s hit a home run!
